The third largest island in the Ionian chain, Zakynthos' lush vegetation, exotic animals, abundant seafood, intriguing caves, scenic overlooks and amazing beaches have drawn visitors to this island since the Neolithic period. Today Zakynthos, or Zante as it's sometimes called, still attracts international visitors. Some come to see the historic architecture. This island has long been known for its sandy beaches and beautiful crystal clear waters. One of the most famous beaches is the shipwreck beach which is named so because of the ruins of boats settled in the middle of the white sandy beach. This 406 square kilometers island is located about 300 km west of the Greece capitol of Athens. With a population of roughly 35,000 it is the fastest growing regions in all of Greece. The island only has 1 town but it does hold around 45 villages.

Supposedly settled by Zakynthos, son of Homer's mythological Trojan king Dardanus, this island has become a center of European tourism, particularly during the months of May to October when Zante is described as being "in season." During the winter months, most tourist attractions close, except for the occasional restaurant that braves the slow winter months to serve the small number of Zante citizens that do not retreat to the mainland during winter. However, even in season, the cost of living in Zante remains fairly reasonable throughout the year.

It is among the biggest Ionian Islands on the map. The Island has got fine weather enclosed with wonderful beaches and warm waters. Those planning for a holiday should consider Zante during the months between April and October since the weather is at its best then.
