What NOT to do in Zante
Written by Anna James | Posted in Blog Updated 20-May

What NOT to do in ZanteMy decision to have a short holiday on a different Greek Isle led me to chose Zante for the culture and lifestyle. I do not regret the trip, but there are a few recommendations of places I would suggest avoiding.

Zante is not as developed as Crete or Mykonos, so it is more important to study the island carefully. I would avoid the south side because it is dotted with unfinished building projects. I certainly would not go again to Laganas town because it is full of enough loud tavernas to accommodate the whole of Birmingham. Unfortunately, in season this town is filled with people of questionable intelligence.

Money Saving Tip #6
Use Travelex.com to get the best rates on your currency (better than the Post Office!).

Most of the areas between Laganas bay and the main Zante town are much less desirable than other areas. Some tourists seem to enjoy riding their motorcycles in the area at high speeds and constantly doing wheelies.

I would not hire a car (more info on Car Hire in Zante) because it could get lost in the deep holes that exist on most roads. The road system doesn’t resemble the local maps, and forget about motorways, or even two-lane roads. Fortunately, I hired a jeep that did quite well, even though I had my moments of doubt.

The goat safaris up the mountains are not something I would recommend. Running the line of widows dressed in black wanting to sell enough table coverings to supply the hotels (more info on Best Hotels in Zante) of London for a year was a challenge. I do not believe the Greeks on Zante have “no thank you” in their vocabulary.

I would avoid the olive oil because I know it would make a better drain cleaner.

Zante town is a working town, but I found the tourists were well cared for. Although its not a place I would choose to spend the night, I would certainly place it a few notches above Dagenham for sure. Shops, cafes, tavernas, and local wine are featured here at reasonable prices.

Money Saving Tip #2
Book your hotel through Booking.com and get the lowest rate for your hotel..guaranteed!

Writing about things not to do in Zante can overwhelm the reader with information that could cause them to believe that Zante is not worth the trip. Lest I leave you with this impression, I hasten to add that there is much beauty and many good accommodations on the Island of Zante and at good value.
